I was standing up the tower at the southern most point at sentosa looking into the sea. In just one passing second I heard the waves crash , the raindrops falling and the leaves rustling. I felt the a pleasant chill breeze, and that the breeze was from two directions. I heard a child’s joyful giggle and a Chinese song. I realized there was a pattern in how the ships were placed and where they were moving. And as though nothing happened I just continued conversing with my friend.

But something else happened. Our conversation about his problem took a turn. I got quieter and seemed to prod my friend for answers. All the solutions I thought I had for his problem disappeared and I just asked questions. We didn’t reach any great solution, but I believe we got farther than we could have with any snippets I would normally retell about my experiences. For those few moments I felt more joy, more power and was just a better friend than I could have been at any point.

Instead of sharing or asserting, I just listened, prodded and continued to experience the magnificence of nature. Soon the night ended, we hugged, we parted, leaving me with the memory of a joyous evening and an experience that has certainly changed my life.

Quite simple actually. You dont have to necessarily make many million dollar mistakes. You just need to be aware. Aware of the situation and things happening around you for starters. But more importantly aware of possible lessons. Thats a really weird statement. But, when I experience things I ve read about or heard about- it just makes sense. Sort of makes a lot of sense. Thats why we needed practical lessons in school, and thats why I should be reading more now as well!

We never met again until yesterday. Miraculously he identified me- he said the mark on my forehead gave it away. He went on to narrate a few anecdotes about the night of which I remember little. One that stood out was about a toffee in my pocket. I believe I was half conscious, and he made conversation to make me feel comfortable. He took the things out of my pocket and asked me if I took them from the family shop. I happened to retort back by saying that I did pay for the toffee and would never take anything despite it being my family’s shop. And he said its such values that your family has given you.

Right at that moment, a great thought struck me. What has to be inherited , and what has to be passed down as legacy is already planted deep within me. The real wealth is truly already here. This is the wealth I can’t garner, the tangible can definitely be re-earned.

I see many families around me go through turmoil after the death of a close one. If the suffering was caused by the pain of the loss, the family would only get closer. But the suffering is caused not by the loss of the loved one, but by battle of inheritance over the loved one’s wealth. I now realize, that many of them have actually “missed the bus” with regard to inheritance.the real wealth is already there within you or its perhaps too late to get it. All you really need, is just the memory..
